The Sympraxis approach is a participatory and porous methodology developed through site-specific practices adapted to each community, emerging from my interdisciplinary research and artistic practice. It offers ways of collaborating with communities and highlighting their unique characteristics through multisensory ethnography, care, proximity, and dialogue. These methods support projects that emerge from a place and the relationships that shape it.

The practice invites a reconsideration of collective action, cultivating bonds with communities through hospitality, humour, patience, and love.

In this afternoon workshop, I will share the Sympraxis project and experiences from communities that are often considered peripheral, including my own island in Cyprus, proposing an approach to meaningful collaboration and co-creation. A screening of a film from the Sympraxis series, Between Vessels, will follow.

In the second part of the workshop, we will walk through the village and experiment with methods of documentation informed by this approach, balancing tenderness, fragility, playfulness, and poetry. The workshop will conclude with a participatory storytelling circle, creating space for the exchange of thoughts and lived experiences. Participants will have the opportunity to share their own perspectives and approaches based on their personal experiences.

The workshop is open to anyone interested in co-creating projects with and for communities, regardless of previous experience, offering practical tools and examples for empowerment and collaboration. Participants are welcome to bring a camera or mobile phone, a notebook or sketchbook, or any other preferred medium for documentation.

Christina Skarpari is an interdisciplinary artist, researcher, and founder of the NGO Xarkis. Her practice emerges through encounters with communities, places, and stories, focusing on participatory and audiovisual processes.
